First, let's take a look at the key strategic points you need to know before diving into this action game.

Omaha-Hi-Lo Strategy – The Main Components

One of the first things you need to know about high and low is that there are two winning hands in the showdown: high and low. The high and low split the pot 50/50. That's not bad. But there is something even better. On the river, make the best high hand and the best low hand to win the pot! 100% of the pot is yours.

The main betting format for Omaha Hi-Lo is pot-limit, but there are also a number of fixed-limit games. It's up to you which game you choose. In terms of pot size comparison, pot-limit games are very similar to no-limit games. Fixed-limit games, on the other hand, limit the number of chips you can put into the pot on each street to a maximum of four times the big blind.

In Omaha MTTs, using the Omaha High-Low tournament strategy can help you make more final tables. It's a balance between a solid starting hand and a good understanding of how low hands work.

Let's talk about Omaha Hi-Lo strategy and start by selecting hands pre-flop.

Starting Hands

Since there are two winning ways in this format, you have to choose a starting hand that can take both. In fact, one of the main strategic rules of this format is as followssplit-pot gamesis "go to the lowest level and come back to the highest". With combinations such as the double straight A-A-2-X combination, you can get a low matt and a matt colour (high combination).

Take a look at this Top Ten list of Best Starting Hands:

  1. A-A-2-3 DS
  2. A-A-2-4 DS
  3. A-A-2-3 Suited
  4. A-A-2-5 DS
  5. A-A-2-4 Suited
  6. A-A-3-4 DS
  7. A-A-2-3 Non-suited
  8. A-A-2-2 DS
  9. A-A-3-5 DS
  10. A-A-2-6 DS

Many gurus are enthusiastic about any combination of A-2-X-X-X, but not all A-2 combinations are the same. Compare, for example, the double A-2-Q-Q-Q and the unchanged A-2-J-8. A-2 with the Queen's kicker beats J-8. It's not even a fair fight.

In other words, low value is an important factor in this poker game, but it accounts for only 50% of winning hands. You should look for hands that contain cards that help you make high hands.

A high card that helps to call or draw, such as an ace of the same suit or a big pair, is an excellent combination.

Low Hands

In Omaha, the target low value and the best low value are two very different things. It is not uncommon for a player with a sure winning low hand to call a big bet on the river.

See the panel and the starting combination below. Can you estimate which low hand will win?

Player 1's low hand is 7s-6s-4d-2d-Ac: Player 1 used 7s, 6s and 2d from the board and Ac and 4d from his hand to get as low as possible.

Player 2's low value is 7s-6s-3d-2s-Ah: player 2 has hit all possible low values with 7s, 6s and Ah on the board and 2s and 3d in his hand.

To calculate downwards, it is better to calculate from top to bottom, with Ace being the lowest card. In this case, both players have A-2, but 3d player 2 is better than 4d player 1 from top to bottom. Player 2 therefore has the better hand. Player 2 therefore has the stronger hand.

Now you know why it is so important to be able to calculate the best minimum value. It's easy to lose with a single card. If you find yourself in a situation where your low hand is likely to lose, it is a good idea to fold or simply call (small bet).

If Player 2 in the above example thought he had the best low hand, he would probably have placed a big boat. What would happen to you if you did? Without a paddle, you would sink further and further down the river.

Once you are familiar with how to make and read low values, you will know when it is best to do so. If an opponent you think has a low value simply calls, do so. It is likely that the opponent does not have your low bet and wants to get you to showdown without losing any more chips.

Counterfeit Lows & Backup Cards

A-2-X-X-X is a very strong starting combination, but a combination such as A-2-3-X is even more favourable. Why? What is a reserve card? It is a card that "backs up" your draw when a low card is on the table.

Remember that in Omaha, a player must make a hand with three cards from the table. So if you have A-3-4-X, 2 can successfully fill the gap between A and 3. If the X is not 4, Low loses!

It is therefore very important to be aware of which low cards can be forged (i.e. they match one of your low cards, making that low card useless). Also, if you want to make sure that your low cards are covered, you should not forget about your spare cards.

Limp! Limp! Limp!

Omaha is a game of draws. It is not uncommon to see several low hands or suited hands in the same suit on the river. There will also be plenty of action in this game as players draw different high and low hands.

Therefore, going all-in before the flop is not a good idea. In fact, it's good to be able to see the flop cheaply. If you come to the table with a high or low hand, take advantage of it! Put as many chips in the middle as possible. In pot-limit games, this is not so difficult.

You just need to make sure that the drawing will hold up when you draw it.

Yes, Position Matters in Omaha!

As with other poker gamesPosition is very important in Omaha Hi-Lo. Play in starting position should be limited to top starting hands, such as Top 10 lists. This will save chips and eliminate the need to play ties from position.

When you are close to the button, it makes more sense to play even money combinations. This gives you control over the pot and your opponents. If a player tries to check, you can check from behind. If your opponents beat you, you can raise your bet and win a bigger pot.

High-low games can be variable depending on the cards dealt and the starting hand. Therefore, play more hands in position to get the most value from high hands, and minimise weak hands by making more folds out of position. Simple.
